Bill to Restore Bicameral Congress Approved in First Vote

PERU
  • Peru’s congress in a first vote approved a bill to restore a bicameral system three decades after its dissolution by Former President Alberto Fujimori. From here, the bill now goes to national referendum, and if wins would then go into effect for the next general elections.
    • The bill as it stands now would reconfigure Peru’s congress into two chambers, a 60-seat Senate and 130-seat Chamber of Deputies, and would also allow for the immediate re-election of lawmakers, which is currently forbidden.
    • “Our political system has entered a crisis and we need a change,” opposition lawmaker Patricia Juarez said during the debate.
