Blinken: Iran Must Comply w/IAEA Safeguarding Agreements

Speaking to the UN Conference of Disarmament, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken says that Iran must comply with the International Atomic Energy Agency's safeguards, adding that the US is interested in 'lengthening and strengthening' an agreement with Iran on its nuclear activities.

  • Adds that the US intends to deal with Iran's 'destabilising regional behaviour' as well as its nuclear missile programme.
  • Blinken's remarks come a day after Tehran reached an agreement with the IAEA that - despite Iran's imminent withdrawal from the 'additional protocol' that gives IAEA inspectors wide-ranging ability to investigate nuclear facilities - IAEA inspectors would still effectively have access to Iranian facilities for three months. The deal reached is seen as a precursor to any future US-Iran dialogue on a nuclear deal.
