Blinken: Israel-Hamas Hostage Deal Is Still Possible

Wires carrying comments from US Secretary of State Antony Blinken on a range of issues. Blinken says he, "believes an Israel-Hamas hostage deal is possible," but there are some "very hard" issues to be resolved.

  • The status of a hostage deal, the most credible route towards a ceasefire, is currently unclear. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin appeared to reject a framework proposed by his own national security officials late last week but negotiations are ongoing.
  • Barak Ravid at Axios reports that CIA Director Bill Burns, "arrived in Israel on Thursday after a quick visit to Doha, where he met Qatari leaders and discussed the hostage deal, a source with direct knowledge told me."
  • Blinken also comments on a national security threat, understood to be intelligence on Russian nuclear capabilities in space, which was disclosed by House Intelligence Committee Chair Mike Turner (R-OH) yesterday, stating that the, "US is taking this issue very seriously and will have more to say very soon."
  • In line with officials yesterday, Blinken says: "This is not an active capability."
