Blinken-No Plans To Meet Chinese Or Russian Foreign Ministers At G20

US

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has said that he 'has no plans' to meet with either Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang or his Russian counterpart Sergey Lavrov at the G20 foreign ministers' meeting in New Delhi, India over the coming 48 hours. Blinken stated that he may be in sessions with the Chinese and Russian ministers, but a sidelines bilateral meeting with either was not in the plans.

  • If this proves to be the case it will mean that the US and China will not have held any high-level ministerial meetings since the 'spy balloon' incident in Feb that saw Blinken's planned trip to China called off.
  • Sideline meetings between ministers at international meetings such as the G20 can often prove useful in prompting backchannel discussions between officials on both sides. In not meeting with Qin or Lavrov, Blinken removes the potential for diplomatic conversations to get underway.
