Blinken Sends In Amr To Israel To Try To Defuse Gaza Tensions

Earlier today, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken announced that he would be sending Hady Amr, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Israel and Palestinian Affairs to the region in an attempt to defuse tensions as the risk of an all-out Israeli assault on the Gaza strip remains high.

  • There has been some criticism of the Biden administration for not having individuals appointed to the relevant positions or officials on the ground quickly enough. The Biden administration's clear intent to not become as involved in Israel/Palestine as the Trump administration can be seen as a factor behind this lag in response.
  • Amr served as the US Deputy Special Envoy for Negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians from 2014 to 2017.
  • Blinken stated, in a clear divergence from the outright pro-Israeli sentiments of the Trump administration that "We fully support Israel's legitimate right to defend itself. We've condemned, and I condemn again, the rocket attacks in the strongest possible terms. We believe Palestinians and Israelis equally deserve to live with safety and security."
