Blinken Tells UNSC: "Putin Shredding International Order"

US-RUSSIA

  • Blinken says the world "cannot and will not," let Putin get away with "shredding" the international order.
  • Blinken points at the cracks beginning to emerge amongst neutral countries (China and India declining to support Russia at the SCO summit last week) who have not aligned with US-led sanctions: "Even nations that maintain close ties with Moscow have serious questions over Putin's invasion."
  • Blinken: "This week Putin said that Russia would not hesitate to use all weapons systems available, a threat that is all the more menacing given Russia's intentions to annex larges swathes of Ukraine […] Russia will claim that any Ukrainian effort to liberate this land will constitute an attack on Russian territory."
  • Blinken: "Russia's effort to annex Ukrainian territory is another dangerous escalation. It is even more alarming when coupled with infiltration operation carried out across the country. Violently uprooting Ukrainians and bussing in Russians to manipulate the [referendum] vote."
  • Blinken: "No annexation of Ukrainian territory can take away Ukraine's right to defend its territory."
