Blinken To Brief Biden On Long-Range Weapons, Following Kyiv Meeting

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken states in a press conference in Kyiv, Ukraine, alongside British Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, that he will brief US President Joe Biden on Kyiv's request to relax restrictions on Western-supplied long-range missiles.

  • Blinken: "We want Ukraine to win and we're fully committed to keep marshalling the support it needs to do that."
  • Reuters notes Blinken says he discussed long-range fires in meetings in Ukraine and will brief Biden on what he heard, noting: "Escalation is one of the factors we consider, but not the only factor."
  • Blinken and Lammy announced a new USD$700 million package for Ukraine that includes USD$325 million in energy assistance and nearly USD$290 million in humanitarian assistance and over USD$102 million in humanitarian demining assistance.
  • Sybiha thanked the US and UK for their support but stressed: “The main thing is to remove all the barriers on using the US and UK weaponry against Russia... It will bring the just peace closer.”
  • UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer is expected to discuss dialing down restrictions on Western-supplied weapons at a White House meeting with Biden on Friday.
