BNB Business Sentiment Dips In May On Manufacturing Outlook

BELGIUM

BELGIUM MAY BUSINESS SENTIMENT -9.2; APR -7.8

  • Belgian business sentiment declined in May, driven by the declining outlooks for the manufacturing industry and construction.
  • The manufacturing industry saw the biggest decline in sentiment, dipping to -14.3 from -12.1 in April, while construction sentiment dipped to -6.6 from -5.4.
  • The services outlook remained the only positive variable, although it weakened slightly from 11.4 to 10.5. The trade outlook meanwhile improved moderately from -15.9 to -9.2.
  • May saw a marked decline in the manufacturing demand outlook and a slight cooling in the services demand outlook.
  • The overall negative drift of the Belgian survey follows a similarly downbeat German IFO Survey for May; the overall IFO Business Climate index declined, led by falling expectations. As such, this data points to evidence of Eurozone growth outlooks weakening.
