BoF Gov. & ECB Governing Council Member Rehn To Run For Presidency

FINLAND

Governor of the Bank of Finland and former European Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn has confirmed that he will be taking a leave of absence from the central bank to enter the race to succeed Finnish President Sauli Niinistö. Rehn, a member of the ECB's governing council and former finance minister stated that “I feel that I have the experience and vision to lead Finland’s foreign and security policy,”

  • Niinistö's second six-year term in office comes to an end in early 2024 and he is term limited from running again.
  • While it is the prime minister (who as of yesterday is Petteri Orpo at the head of a right-wing coalition) that is the head of gov't and primary director of domestic policy, the president as head of state has notable influence on Finnish foreign policy. Niinistö has been viewed as a key contributor, alongside former PM Sanna Marin, to Finland's entry into NATO and Helsinki's hard-line stance against Russia.
  • Alongside Rehn frontrunners for the presidency are - from the agrarian Centre Party but running as an independent - former foreign minsiter Pekka Haavisto, and head of Finnish Foreign Policy Institute Mika Aaltola.
