Boris Johnson Visits Zelenskyy In Kyiv For Final Time As UK PM

UKRAINE

UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has made a surprise trip to the Ukrainian capital Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for the final time that the former is in office. The visit comes on the occasion of Ukraine's Independence Day commemorations, the first since the country came under Russian attack in February.

  • PM's office confirms the UK will donate military aid worth GBP54mn, including 200 drones and loitering munitions.
  • Comments from Johnson at joint presser w/Zelenskyy: Says UK 'stands shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine'.
  • Johnson: "The world must step up arms supplies to Ukraine, Russia's losses are colossal and Putin's leverage will diminish". Putin "fatally underestimated" Ukraine and the price that the world community was willing to pay to support Ukraine....We must fight any attempts to normalise relations with Russia, this is not the time to advance a 'flimsy' plan for negotiations.
  • Johnson: 'Britons have the patience to deal with higher fuel prices caused by Russia's war in Ukraine...Britian must stay the course in supporting Ukraine: we are paying high energy bills, Ukrainians are paying in blood...It's important to reduce energy reliance that can be manipulated by people like Putin.'
  • Johnson: 'US support has been indispensable to Ukraine's struggle against Russia's invasion.
  • Zelenskyy thanks US for latest USD3bn military support package.
UK gov't and Johnson in particular seen as crucial allies in Kyiv, some concerns change in leadership could see London's focus/level of support drop off. Likely Johnson successor Liz Truss is a hard-line Russia hawk and unlikely to back any proposal that does not involve comprehensive Ukrainian victory.
