BP Plans To Restart Whiting Units on 2 Feb

REFINING

BP is planning to restart units at the 435kbpd Whiting, Indiana, refinery today – the largest US Midwest refinery - after a power outage led the company to shut down operations, the firm said, cited by Argusmedia.

  • The refiner expects power to be restored to the plant by 11:00pm ET Friday before restarting units in the morning, the City of Whiting said in a statement this evening, citing BP officials.
  • "We are in the process of safely shutting down the refinery after a suspected power outage. We have activated our emergency response team and evacuated refinery office buildings out of an abundance of caution”, BP said shortly after the fire broke out.
  • The refinery produces around 238kbpd of gasoline, 95kbpd of diesel and 48kbpd of jet fuel and supplies approximately 7% of all asphalt in the US, according to BP.
  • At the same time, the refinery is one of the largest consumers of Canadian heavy crude in the region.
