Brent Open Interest Drifts Lower Amid Thin Trading Volumes

Brent open interest has drifted lower in the second half of December, but WTI interest has recovered so far this week after a drop earlier in the month. Brent aggregate futures open interest has fallen from a high of 2.16m on Dec 18 back to a low of 2.11m on Dec 27. WTI crude futures aggregate open interest is back to mid month levels at 1.58m from a low of 1.55m last week.

  • Crude aggregate daily traded futures volumes are low during the holiday period with Brent down at 0.65m compared to the average daily volume in the first half of December of 0.99m. WTI volumes were yesterday down at 0.55m compared to an average of 0.81m in early December.
  • ICE Gasoil futures open interest continues the trend higher since mid November up to 0.667m while aggregate daily traded volumes are down to around 150k this week.
  • Nymex RBOB gasoline futures open interest has edged down to 0.329m with traded volumes about 120k.
