Brief Joint Statement Signals Little Progress In NI Protocol Talks

EU-UK

The UK and EU have issued an extremely brief joint statement following the meeting between EU Commission VP Maros Sefcovic and UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss earlier today.

  • Statement reads: "European Commission Vice-President Maroš Šefčovič and the UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss met on 11 February at Carlton Gardens in London. This was their third in-person meeting. They agreed on the need for progress in their talks in the interest of people in Northern Ireland, to stay in close touch and that officials will continue intensive discussions in the coming days."
  • Focus now on whether a deal can be put together before the 21 February meeting of the EU-UK Joint Committee under the Withdrawal Agreement, seen as something of a deadline for the DUP (the unionist political party demanding major changes to the protocol).
