Broad Improvement In Business Optimism, Reduced Price Pressures

  • Small business sentiment increased 3.5pts to 55.3 in March, the highest since Jun’22 after its largest monthly increase since Jun’21 for the CFIB twelve-month outlook.
  • The current general business situation declined slightly to broadly trend sideways in recent months.
  • There is however the caveat that the survey was through Mar 2-14 and so only just caught any initial fallout from US regional banking woes.
  • Average price plans continued to trend lower to 3.5% (although still vs 2.1% 2018-19av) and average wage plans also edged back 0.2pts to 3.1% (2.0% 2018-19av) for the next year.
  • The share expecting to increase full-time staff over the next 3-4 months increased from 19% to 25% and the highest since May’22 (17.4% 2018-19 av).
