Budget Deficit Smaller Than Projected For FY 21-22

CANADA
  • Final budget deficit for FY 2021-22 smaller than initially projected at C$90.2B (3.5% GDP) vs prior projection C$113.8B in the April budget. Revenue exceeded budget projections at C$413.3B vs C$394.4B.
  • It follows a deficit of C$327.B the year before during the height of the pandemic.
  • Looking ahead, an earlier Reuters sources story said the Fall Economic Statement could include additional ‘targeted’ spending but wouldn’t make the BoC’s job harder - “It behooves the federal government to continue to demonstrate some responsible fiscal stewardship right now".
  • GoCs broadly track Treasuries today after yesterday’s post-BoC substantial rally, with modest underperformance at the front end and outperformance at the longer end (2YY -5bp, 10YY -7.5bp).
