Call for Debate on Mexico’s Unconventional Hydrocarbon Resources

ENERGY

Mexico cannot afford to neglect the exploitation of unconventional hydrocarbon resources, often extracted via fracking, experts opined at an energy forum held at the Mexican senate, Platt said.

  • Mexico has around 113 billion boe in resources, with 57% in unconventional deposits.
  • Most of these resources have either never been assigned for exploration or have never been included in any liberalisation plans.
  • Mexico’s production is in decline, so investment in new technology, especially in fracking, will be critical for the industry.
  • Experts also noted that Mexico’s dependence on foreign natural gas is even greater than its dependence on foreign gasoline, with the former above 90%.
  • A key challenge is the lack of investment and long-term planning. Experts called for an independent gas division within Pemex with financial incentives.
  • Around 6% of Mexico’s gas production is burned off, down from 13% in previous years, but above the norm of around 2%.
