Campaigning Starts For Upper House By-Elections

JAPAN

Campaigning for a couple of by-elections to the House of Councillors, the upper house of Japan's National Diet, kicked off on Thursday. The snap polls will provide a test for the ruling LDP under the leadership of Fumio Kishida ahead of this month's general election.

  • The two by-elections in Shizuoka and Yamaguchi were called after incumbent LDP lawmakers vacated their seats to run in other elections.
  • The LDP are expected to win both seats as the opposition failed to rally behind joint candidates. Yamaguchi is an LDP stronghold, which hosts the constituency of former Premier Abe.
  • Both by-elections are slated for October 24, just a week before the much awaited general election.
