Casellati Short Of Majority In Presidential Vote, 6th Round At 1700CET

ITALY

As had been widely anticipated, no single candidate won the required 50%+1 votes in the fifth round of Italy's presidential election held earlier today. Results below:

  • Presidential Election results (fifth round): Casellati (FI-EPP): 382, Mattarella (*): 46, Others: 82, Blank/Null/Abstain: 426, Absent: 73.
  • Earlier, MNI's Policy team reported that no conclusive result is expected in tonight's sixth round, taking place at 1700CET (1100ET, 1600GMT).
  • Senate Speaker Elisabetta Casellati, a social conservative from Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia, gained the backing of electors from parties of the centre-right and right inclusing Forza, Matteo Salvini's League, and the right-wing nationalist Brothers of Italy. Without support from the populist 5-Star Movement the right will not be able to get their preferred candidate into the presidential palace.
