Castillo Approval Ratings Plummet, Congress Willing To Call General Election

  • Approval ratings for President Castillo have dropped sharply amid soaring inflation and mass unrest, and nearly two-thirds of voters think he should quit, a poll found.
    • The government was rejected by a record 76% of respondents in an Ipsos survey commissioned by America TV and published on Sunday. 63% said the president should resign rather than stay to complete his term in 2026. Disapproval of congress also reached an all-time high of 79%.
    • Peru’s congress is willing to call for early general elections, Congress President Maria Alva said to journalists on Monday after criticism for suspending sales taxes on luxury food products.
  • Separately, Peru’s government reiterated its support of responsible private investment after meeting with executives at the Antamina copper-zinc venture owned by BHP and Glencore.
    • Antamina is planning a $1.6b expansion after environmental approval, Prime Minister Anibal Torres said in a Twitter post.
