Cavusoglu Says Turkey Wont Block NATO Sweden, Finland Applications, But Eyes Concessions

  • Cavusoglu says on Sunday that Turkey would not oppose NATO application by Finland & Sweden, but announced a list of demands that it would like to see the two countries meet.
    • Asks that they pledge to drop bans on the export of some goods to Turkey, to provide security guarantees to Turkey and to prevent the Kurdistan Workers’ Party, or P.K.K., from operating in those countries.
    • Both countries has said they would work with Turkey on the issues as they need its vote to secure their position in the 30-member NATO alliance – NYT, Sabah, Hurriyet
  • Expert says Turkey’s objection to Sweden & Finland joining NATO is no surprise. Turkey has used occasions like this to stand out and seek certain concessions in return for its support.
