CBI Industrial Trends Survey Sees PPI Cooling Further

UK DATA
MNI (London)

UK JUN CBI INDUSTRIAL ORDERS -15 (FCST -18); MAY -17

UK JUN CBI INDUSTRIAL EXPECTED SELLING PRICES +19 (FCST +20); MAY +21

  • The CBI Industrial Trends survey flagged another month of weak production in June. The report highlighted a small reduction in output volumes alongside a dip selling price projections.
  • CBI industrial price expectations cooled to the lowest since February 2021, yet remain above the historical average. This supports a continuation of the current downwards trend in factory-gate inflation. This morning's May PPI cooled to +2.9% y/y (down 2.3pp) for output and to +0.5% y/y (down 3.7pp) on the input front.
  • The UK manufacturing PMI dipped further into contraction in May and consensus is looking for the PMI to edge lower by 0.3pp to 46.8 in the June prelim data due on Friday. Weak new orders are outweighing boosts to production provided by easing supply-chain pressures. With demand softening and higher interest rates biting into investment appetite, outlooks for the UK industrial production remain lacklustre.
