UK CBI EXPECTED SALES FOR JUN 0

  • The CBI Distributive Trends survey signalled a decline in sales in May, yet retailers expect sales to stabilise in June. Overall sales were seen as "disappointing" for the time of year.
  • Persistently high inflation alongside a three-month streak of declining retail employment were cited as key headwinds facing the UK retail industry at present, whereby employment in the sector fell at the fastest pace since February 2009.
  • Overall business conditions are seen improving modestly in the next three months.
  • Consensus is forecasting a small improvement in April retail sales due tomorrow to +0.3% m/m (+0.4% ex fuel), largely in line with the CBI's April report.
  • The May GfK consumer sentiment indicator posted a fourth consecutive improvement, albeit remains firmly in pessimistic territory, implying any rebounds in spending will be modest for now.
