CDU Overtakes Scholz's SPD In Latest INSA Poll

GERMANY

The main opposition centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) has overtaken Chancellor Olaf Scholz's centre-left Social Democrats (SPD) in the latest poll from outlet INSA. This is the first poll from INSA showing the CDU leading since August 2021, prior to the federal election that saw the CDU ousted from the chancellery.

  • INSA poll: CDU/CSU: 25% (+1), SPD: 24% (-2), Greens: 15% (-1), FDP: 13% (+2), AfD: 10% (-1), Die Linke: 7% (+1). Fieldwork: 28-31 Jan. Chgs w/ 24-28 Jan. 2,247 respondents.
  • Slide in support for the SPD comes amidst concerns over the heightened tensions on the Russo-Ukrainian border (polls show most Germans strongly opposed to their country becoming involved in any conflict), rising cost of living, and a large wave of COVID-19 infections.
