CDU Shows Signs Of Recovery In Latest Poll

GERMANY

The latest polls from outlet INSA shows something of a recovery in support for the centre-right Christian Democratic Union (CDU) ahead of the September federal election.

  • INSA: CDU/CSU: 26% (+2), Green: 22% (-1), Social Democrats: 16% (-1), Free Democrats: 12.5% (-0.5), Alternative for Germany: 11.5% (-0.5), Die Linke: 6.5% (+0.5). Fieldwork: 21-25 May. Chgs w/17-21 May. 2,128 respondents.
  • Of the past 10 opinion polls carried out in Germany (from 13 May onwards) the CDU has lead in 7 with the Greens ahead in 3.
  • This marks a stark contrast to polls in late April and early May, when the Greens recorded sustained leads, with CDU chancellor candidate Armin Laschet being viewed as a turn-off for voters compared to the Greens' Annalena Baerbock.
  • All eyes will be on the upcoming state election in the central-eastern state of Saxony-Anhalt to be held on 6 June. The state is currently run by a joint CDU-SPD-Green coalition. Polls so far point towards the CDU holding onto its plurality, but there have not been any carried out in May, making projecting the outcome a difficult challenge.
