Central Bank Continues To Push Back Against Criticism Amid Incoming Gov't's Indecision

NBP

The National Bank of Poland released a statement pushing back against criticism of Governor Adam Glapinski and the central bank's handling of various crises over the past few years, which has seen senior lawmakers from the pro-EU coalition toy the idea of taking Glapinski to the Tribunal of State.

  • Bloomberg circulated snips from the NBP's statement, which cited an opinion by the ECB saying that the Polish central bank's QE programme did not amount to monetary financing - contrary to the opinions of some of Glapinski's critics.
  • Central bank officials have recently gone on the record to defend the Governor, with NBP spokesman Wojciech Andrusiewicz warning that any attack on NBP independence would affect the exchange rate and the valuation of Polish assets.
  • Andrusiewicz's comments came after First Deputy Governor Marta Kightley, who would replace the Governor should he get suspended, gave an interview in which she dismissed all accusations against Glapinski.
  • WP reported that there is no consensus within the incoming government about taking the Governor to court. Andrzej Domanski, the leading candidate for the next Finance Minister, is reportedly sceptical of the idea.
