UK: Chancellor Sajid Javid states in a panel discussion at WEF in Davos that the
UK gov't plans to go ahead with the imposition of a "digital tax" from April.
- Levy will place a tax of 2% on UK revenues of search engines, online
marketplaces, and social media firms.
- This could prove disruptive for the prospect of a swift UK-US trade deal after
it leaves the EU, given the US' hardline stance towards France when it wanted to
implement its own digital services tax.
- Javid warned off digital tax in April by former chancellor George Osborne and
Sec Gen of OECD Angel Gurria. Latter says risk of "cacophony and a mess" of
multiple countries implementing their own digital tax, rather than an
international agreement.
