Chicago Business Barometer: Shortages Continue to Weigh on Firms

In December, the Chicago Business BarometerTM, produced with MNI, asked firms "What has been the biggest challenge to executing plans for the holiday season?"

  • When asked to select their top two challenges faced this holiday season, global shortages and logistics were most frequently flagged (accounting for approx. 24% of responses each), followed by staff shortages at 22%.
  • Higher energy prices was the fourth most-cited issue at around 15%, followed by Covid-19 at 8%.
  • Only 7% of respondents felt unimpacted by these challenges.
