Chicago Survey Highlights Uncertainty in Hiring Plans

US DATA
MNI (London)

The September Chicago Business Barometer recorded substantial uncertainty regarding hiring plans into year-end.

  • Around 41% of respondents were considering new hires, however, half of these were looking to hire less than originally planned, whilst 33.3% were holding off on new hires. A minority of 2.6% anticipated severances, with 23.1% unsure of employment plans for H2.
  • In September, the Chicago PMI Employment sub-index recorded the starkest decline and re-entered contractive territory. Continued difficulties in hiring due to the tight labour market, in conjunction with slowing growth expectations and high running costs contributed to uncertainty regarding future hiring.
