CHINA-Chancellor Talks To China VP On Restarting Econ & Finance Dialogue

UK

(MNI) London - Chinese state outlet Xinhua reports on a call between Vice Premier He Lifeng and UK Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves. He requested the call in order to "exchange views on restarting the China-UK Economic and Financial Dialogue and strengthening economic and trade cooperation."

  • He said that in addition to restarting dialogue and boosting trade cooperation, "China is willing to work with the UK to implement the important consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, [...] strengthen the alignment of development strategies, [...] and expand cooperation in areas such as finance, green economy, biomedicine, and artificial intelligence."
  • Reeves said the UK "is willing to strengthen dialogue and cooperation with China to establish a stable and lasting foundation for the development of long-term mutually beneficial relations".
  • Last month, UK PM Sir Keir Starmer and Chinese President Xi Jinping held their first official call since the former came to office. Starmer said he hoped the two could have "open, frank and honest" talks about their disagreements, while Xi said Starmer should "view their relations from a long-term and strategic perspective".
  • The call comes a day after former UK Trade Minister Lord Mandelson said at an event at the University of Hong Kong on 16 Sep that the UK gov't “has decided that it wants to engage with China after many years of a very poor, deteriorating relationship … and I hope that China will reciprocate in that re-engagement”. Mandelson was an informal adviser to Starmer during his time in opposition.
