China Foreign Min Talks Up Need For Positive Sino-US Relations

US-CHINA

(MNI) London - Speaking at an event in Beijing marking 45 years of Sino-US relations, Chinese Foreign Minsiter Wang Yi states that "No conflict or confrontation between China and the US is the most important peace dividend for mankind....China and the US bear heavy responsibility for world peace and security....The need for cooperation between the two is not weakened, but stronger."

  • Wang: "Can be said Sino-US cooperation is good for both countries, but 'no longer a dispensable choice' for the world....Artificial decoupling is moving against the tide and the losses outweigh gains."
  • Wang: "We should adhere to mutual respect, most urgent task is to establish correct understanding....We have no intention of replacing anyone...We hop US can relax and respect Chinese people with an equal and inclusive attitude."
  • Wang: "We should not move towards confrontation because of differences, let along using the 'big stick' of sanctions to exercise power...Both sides should continue to make full use of foreign affairs, economy, finance, commerce, agriculture, and other areas to restore and establish mechanisms to communicates as soon as possible."
Wang's comments come in the weeks following seemingly positive signals regarding a possibility of an improvement in relations between the global superpowers, with US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen outlining her priorities in bolstering links, while the two sides also resumed military communications in Nov '23. Nevertheless, continuing trade spats, the US presidential election race and other issues post continued threats to any detente through 2024.
