China International Travel Still Lags Well Behind Pre-Pandemic

JET FUEL

OAG figures highlight China domestic flight recovery remaining firmly above 2019 levels while international recovery still languishes behind. (see chart)

  • China cross-border travel may take another year to fully recover according to World Travel & Tourism Council Chief Executive Office Julia Simpson.
  • China traffic with US/Canada was running about one tenth of pre-pandemic in September according to OAG.
  • Factors like an inability for western carriers to use Russian air space to get to China has damaged scheduling. Chinese carriers can use the air space making them much more cost effective because the route burns far less fuel.
  • The number of weekly round-trip flights between China/US is set to rise to 24 for each nation by the end of October. Before Covid, the weekly flights between them averaged ~340.
