China Oil Imports Fall Back in April at 10.88mn bpd

China oil imports slipped in April due to seasonal maintenance in the country. They came in at 44.72mn metric tons (10.9mn bpd) in April according to General Administration of Customs data, down from 11.6mn bpd in March.

  • Chinese state refiners plan a total 157m tons/yr maintenance in 2024, 18% more than last year and the heaviest in three years according to OilChem.
  • Chinese consultancy JLC had previously said that it forecast sea-borne oil shipments to fall 4.6% in April from March due to tight profit margins and the arrival of maintenance season.
  • It also forecasts state refiner peak maintenance in Q2 of this year.
