China Proposes 12-Point Peace Plan Favouring Moscow

RUSSIA
  • China called for a cease-fire between Russia and Ukraine in a 12-point proposal for ending the war that appears to offer some reprieve to Moscow, though little chance of winning broad support, Bloomberg report. Several of the measures outlined by China would offer clear benefits to President Putin such as a cease-fire measure which would freeze Russian troops in place on Ukrainian territory, as well as a call to immediately end all sanctions not endorsed by the UN Security Council, where Russia holds veto power.
  • US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, speaking on CNN, said China’s proposal should have ended after the first bulletpoint, which calls for “respecting the sovereignty of all countries.”
  • Yesterday, Belarus President Lukashenko announced China President Xi would make a statement on Ukraine either Thursday or Friday.

  • The UK government has sanctioned 92 individuals and entities connected to Russia on the one-year anniversary of the invasion of Ukraine, according to a statement cited by Bloomberg. Putin’s former chief of security and the CEO of Nord Stream 2 are among the individuals sanctioned. Additionally, export bans will be placed on items Russia has been using on the battlefield.
