CHINA-RUSSIA: PMs Talk Up Links At SCO Summit Ahead Of Xi/Putin Meeting @ BRICS

CHINA-RUSSIA

(MNI) London - During a meeting on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Islamabad, Pakistan with Russian PM Mikhail Mishustin, Chinese Premier Li Qiang said "China is willing to further deepen cooperation with Russia in traditional fields such as economy, trade, and energy, promote cooperation in emerging fields such as the digital economy, continuously improve the level of cooperation in the industrial chain and supply chain between the two countries," according to state outlet Xinhua

  • Xinhua reports Mishustin stating that Sino-Russian relations are at an "unprecedented high level". Mishustin adds that "Under the current international situation", the two countries should "support each other in safeguarding core interests, strengthen the connection between the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative and the Eurasian Economic Union, deepen practical cooperation in the fields of economy, trade, energy, transportation, agriculture"
  • The PM-level meeting came a day after Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov met with China's Central Military Commission vice chairman, Zhang Youxia, in Beijing for what was described as 'very substantive' talks.
  • These meetings are a precursor to next week's BRICS summit in Kazan, Russia where Russian President Vladimir Putin is expected to host his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping. The meeting will be watched for signals on cooperation between the two. Increased military and economic links between Moscow and Beijing remain one of the key sources of geopolitical concern for the US amid the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East, and heightened Indo-Pacific tensions.
