China Targeting Russia ESPO Blend

China accelerated Russian crude liftings ahead of the December 5th sanctions on Russian exports according to Vortexa.

  • China has been leaning on a higher proportion of cargoes from the Far East of Russia rather than bringing in crude from the Baltic and the Black Sea.
  • In the most recent period, it is evident as the share of ESPO Blend has been much higher, with fewer Urals cargoes making these longer journeys to China at the moment as freight rates soar.
  • The latest volumes of Chinese crude imports have sat at 1.15m bpd, a 30,000 bpd increase month over month.
