China Transport LNG Demand Boosted By Competitive Price Vs Diesel

LNG

Natural gas demand in China is recovering at a slower than expected pace amid larger-than-normal inventories but transport sector gas demand is improving according to Bloomberg.

  • The economics of LNG are improving against alternate fuels to help boost transportation gas demand with consumption outpacing China’s total gas demand growth in 2023.
  • China’s total gas consumption increased 3% year-on-year to 97bcm in Q1 while the transport sector increased 5% due to the competitive LNG price.
  • LNG-fuelled heavy-duty commercial vehicles sales more than tripled in January-April from the same period last year.
  • Domestic LNG prices fell 70% below diesel prices at the beginning of February. LNG heavy-duty vehicles become more economical compared with diesel-powered trucks when LNG prices are lower than 70% of diesel prices.
  • Gas demand in China is forecast to increase 9% yr/yr in Q2 to 87bcm with the transport sector potentially up 16% according to Bloomberg.
