China Won't Recognise BN(O) Passports From 31 Jan After UK Visa Offer

HONG KONG

China's Foreign Ministry has announced that it will no longer recognise British National (Overseas) passports on 31 January, the day the UK launches a new visa application scheme for BN(O) Hongkongers and their families that will put them on a path to British citizenship.

  • The decision is unlikely to impact those seeking to leave Hong Kong for the UK, or indeed BN(O) holders in Hong Kong looking to travel to the mainland given that they would use a Home Return permit for that purpose.
  • The UK has stated that an individual seeking to apply for the new visa would not need to travel to the UK on a BN(O) passport, with their status as a holder enough to qualify.
  • The move to constrain BN(O) passport holders in Hong Kong may not be the final one from Beijing. Chinese gov't has been vociferous in criticism of UK offer, saying the UK is seeking to make BN(O) Hong Kongers 'second class British citizens'.
