AUSTRALIA: /CHINA: Worth recapping a weekend piece from the AFR which noted
that: "Souring relations between China and Australia are set to be tested
further after Canberra was given 10 days to explain why Beijing should not
impose tariffs of up to 80 per cent on Australian barley imports. The ultimatum,
issued overnight Saturday, follows an 18-month Chinese investigation into claims
by Beijing that Australia dumped barley into China. The market was worth just
under $600 million to Australian farmers in 2019.Australia rejects the dumping
claims and is prepared to take China to the World Trade Organisation if it makes
good on the threat. Chinese officials had until May 19 to wind up an
anti-dumping investigation they launched under WTO rules that has been hanging
over the heads of barley growers and grain marketers since late 2018."
