Chinese Premier To Attend Trade Summits In France And Germany

CHINA-EU

Chinese Premier Li Qiang will depart tomorrow on a business orientated trip to France and Germany, his first international trip since assuming office in March.

  • According to the Global Times, Li will visit Germany for the seventh China-Germany Inter-Governmental Consultation, and then travel to France where he will attend the Summit for a New Global Financing Pact.
  • Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Wang Webin said at a press conference: "Choosing Germany and France for his first trip fully demonstrates the great importance China attaches to relations with the two countries."
  • The high-profile trip, which coincides with US Secretary of State Antony Blinken's bridge-building trip to Beijing, looks set to further demonstrate Europe and the US' the differing approaches to China.
  • The Global Times noted these differences, saying that Germany has adopted "certain Western rhetoric against China" but also states that, "China remained Germany's most important trading partner for seventh consecutive year in 2022."
