Chonlanan Steps Down As PTP Leader, Srettha Plans To Announce Energy Price Cuts

THAILAND

Pheu Thai Party's (PTP) Chinlanana Srikaew has stepped down as party leader after confirming that the line-up of the new Cabinet has been agreed in principle and awaits submission for royal endorsement.

  • Deputy leader Chusak Sirinil will lead the ruling party in caretaker capacity, before the election of a new leader and party executives within 60 days from now. Chonlanan refused to declare if he will seek a nomination.
  • The Cabinet line-up is yet to be announced, but many names have been leaked by local media. Lawyer Phichit Chuenban was reported to be the latest addition to the new Cabinet, with some PTP members questioning why Chusak was skipped.
  • New Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin said that one of the first steps of his administration would be to reduce energy prices. He is planning to implement cuts to diesel and electricity prices right after the first meeting of his Cabinet.
