CHP Head-Opposition May Not Announce Joint Candidate On 13 Feb

TURKEY

Turkey's Milliyet reporting that the opposition grouping intending to field a joint presidential candidate in the May general election could delay the announcement of the individual selected, potentially hinting at divisions within the ideologically diverse alliance. Kemal Kilicdaroglu, head of the main opposition centre-left Republican People's Party (CHP) stated that “Even if we choose the candidate on February 13, we will not announce it that day. We will announce the nomination later,”

  • Opinion polling for the parliamentary election shows incumbent President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's right-wing populist Justice and Development Party (AKP) on course to wing a plurality, with the CHP in second place. The anti-Erdogan nationalist Good Party (IYI) has gained support and could challenge its Nation Alliance partner the CHP.
  • The identity of the opposition 'Group/Table of Six' presidential candidate could prove crucial. While Kilicdaroglu leads the largest opposition party, head-to-head polling shows that he would face the tightest contest against Erdogan.
