CNB To Publish "Monitoring Central Banks" Report, Zeman Supports Babis In Presidential Race

CZECHIA
  • Outgoing Czech President Milos Zeman threw his weight behind former Prime Minister Andrej Babis and said he is the only contender in the upcoming presidential election with sufficient political experience. Zeman poured cold water on opinion polls suggesting that Babis will lose to either of his two main rivals if he proceeds to the runoff, as he also wasn't the frontrunner to win in the second round and "TV debates decide." Babis had earlier said that he would not participate in televised debates until the year-end. The first round of the Czech election is scheduled for January 13/14, with a possible runoff due two weeks after.
  • The Czech National Bank is preparing to announce its final monetary policy decision of the year this Wednesday. The Bank Board is widely expected to maintain its policy of rate stabilisation, despite calls from former Governor Jiri Rusnok to resume the rate-hike cycle and bring inflation to the central bank's tolerance band sooner.
  • The CNB will publish its "Monitoring Central Banks" report, a quarterly overview of the latest developments in monetary policy, strategy and communication of eleven central banks including itself, at 1200CET/1100GMT.
