Commission Starts Legal Action Against Hungary, Poland For Infringing Rights

The European Commission has released a press statement outlining its launching of legal action against the gov'ts of Hungary and Poland "related to the equality and the protection of fundamental rights".

  • The Commission statement says that should Poland and Hungary not reverse course on certain laws that Brussels states discriminates against LGBT individuals, it will in two months issue a 'reasoned opinion' and could refer them to the European Court of Justice.
  • The European Parliament has pressed for swifter action on Poland and Hungary's actions, with demands for the use of Article 7 to remove voting rights and limit structural funding to both nations.
