Russia’s Deputy PM Novak to Visit China

RUSSIA

A Russian delegation led by Deputy PM Alexander Novak will visit Beijing from Dec. 12-16 to participate in the 20th meeting of the Russian Chinese intergovernmental commission on energy cooperation, according to TASS.

  • The annual meeting follows a rare visit by Vladimir Putin to China in October at the belt and road initiative (BRI) forum in Beijing.
  • China has become a key market for Russian oil following the implementation of sanctions after its invasion of Ukraine in Feb. 2022.
  • On their side, Chinese refineries have been able to capitalize on discounted barrels from Russia.
  • Russia is also looking to increase its natural gas exports to China, with the planned development of the Power of Siberia 2 gas pipeline in discussions.
