Communities Agree Truce With MMG, BCRP To Hold Press Conference

  • Peru’s central bank will hold a press conference after announcing its decision to hike rates by 50bp at yesterday’s meeting, in line with all surveyed analysts.
  • Indigenous communities in Peru will lift protests that halted operations at the Bambas copper mine for the past seven weeks, as part of a 30-day truce agreed with Chinese owner MMG Ltd.
    • In government-mediated talks Thursday, the two sides agreed to an arrangement whereby communities will cease protests in exchange for the company not starting development work on a new open pit, the Ministry of Energy and Mines said in Twitter post.
  • Separately, Peru’s agricultural minister Andres Alencastre will speak about government initiatives to face fertilizer shortage at a congress committee.
