Congressional Hearing On Ukrainian Humanitarian Crisis Underway

US

A US House of Representatives Oversight and Reform committee hearing is underway on the escalating food security and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

  • The hearing can be followed here: https://oversight.house.gov/legislation/hearings/t...
  • Comes as the US and Ukraine accuse Russia of "blackmail" and "exporting starvation" by blockading Ukrainian exports in the Black Sea.
  • IISS director John Chipman has told the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore: "Success in Europe is vital to success in Asia. How can one speak about helping to support a free and open Indo Pacific when so far it has not proven possible to secure a free and open Black Sea?"
  • Yesterday Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that millions could be affected by the Russian blockade of Ukrainian ports. Zelensky: "Ukraine will only be able to export a maximum of 2 million tons of grains a month – just one-third of its usual 6 million tons of exports – if Russia refuses to lift its blockade of the country's Black Sea port."
  • Axios published a report today showing the most severely exposed countries to a collapse of Ukrainian food exports.
