Conservative Merz Wins Vote To Head CDU

GERMANY

Earlier this afternoon, former Bundestag leader and businessman Friederich Merz was voted in as the new head of the main-opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU).

  • At his third attempt, Merz, the most conservative candidate in the field, saw off competition from centrists Norbert Rottgen and Helge Braun.
  • With 62% of the vote among grassroots party members, Merz's overwhelming win negated the need for a run-off. A party convention on 21-22 January 2022 will confirm the election result.
  • Under Merz's leadership the CDU is likely to pivot to the right on economic and social issues, after sitting as a staunchly pro-EU, centrist party for much of former Chancellor Angela Merkel's tenure as party leader.
  • Merz has argued the party needs to 'return' to its conservative roots to win back voters that have abandoned the party for the right-wing nationalist Alternative for Germany who became dissilusioned with the party under Merkel and her short-term successors as party leader Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer and Armin Laschet.
