Conservative MP Wakeford Defects To Labour In Major Blow To PM Johnson

UK

Conservative MP for Bury South Christian Wakeford has 'crossed the floor' of the House of Commons and defected to the Labour Party. Wakeford blasted PM Boris Johnson and the gov't in his statement, saying that 'you and the Conservative Party as a whole have shown themselves incapable of offering the leadership and government this country deserves'.

  • The defection of MPs is a major political rarity. The last Conservative to Labour defection came in 2007, when Grantham and Stanford MP Quentin Davies quit the party, then under David Cameron.
  • Coming just before PMQs, this is a hammer blow to PM Johnson's credibility. Wakeford was first elected in 2019, and was the first Conservative to hold Bury South since the Labour landslide of 1997.
