Constitutional Court Upholds Pension Reforms, Finance Ministry Publishes Forecasts

CZECHIA
  • The Constitutional Court upheld the government's reforms curbing pension growth to reduce budget deficits, even as three out of fifteen judges expressed dissenting opinions (nine were required to strike down the legislation). The top court did not share the assessments of the main opposition party ANO, who were trying to challenge the legislation on procedural grounds.
  • The Senate recommended Milan Hulmak for the position of a constitutional judge, paving the way for his appointment to the top court. The smooth approval of the new judge comes after a couple of earlier candidates proposed by President Petr Pavel failed to make it into the court amid various controversies.
  • The Chamber of Deputies is expected to vote in first reading on the proposal to introduce postal voting for Czechs living abroad at 14:00GMT/15:00CET. The Foreign Ministry estimates that around 400-600 thousand Czechs live abroad, while only 20 thousand applied for voter cards at embassies during the last election.
  • The Finance Ministry will release its quarterly economic and financial forecasts at 10:30GMT/11:30CET. The new forecast will be published on the Ministry's website.
