Consumer Confidence Edges Off Lows

GERMAN DATA

GERMANY DEC CONSUMER SENTIMENT -40.2 (FCST -39.6); NOV 41.9

  • German consumer confidence rose 1.7 points in December outlook to -40.2, improving for the second consecutive month, although remaining only a couple of points above October's record low.
  • Improved economic outlooks and income expectations provided a welcome boost, yet the propensity to buy weakened slightly.
  • Consumers are hoping government regulation and energy price caps will curb further price growth. This, in conjunction with recent collective wage increases, has allowed real income expectations to cautiously improve. Nevertheless, GfK sees private consumption dragging on growth in 2023.
  • Similar one-point improvements are anticipated in French and Italian indexes due this morning. Persistently high inflation levels across the bloc suggest consumer confidence and spending is unlikely to rebound until prices stabilise.
